Reuben Lorch-Miller Untitled 4
These ceramic sculptures were first bisque fired with the glaze then transported upstate to some friends' land, where we built a pit fire kiln. The sculptures were placed at the bottom of the pit, a fire was built over them and set alight. They were in the fire for 16 hours. After the fire burnt down, the sculptures were revealed, removed and cleaned. Some of them were broken by the intensity of the heat and were glued back together again. The patina and colors on the sculptures are a combination of the initial glaze and the smoke, gases, and carbon produced in the fire being in contact with and absorbed by the ceramics.
